Magma
The Magma collection was created when Onno wanted to translate the aesthetics of patinated
metals to wood. By intentionally oxidising with various acids and techniques, beautiful patterns
and colour gradients can be created on metals such as brass and copper. This is less common in
wood finishing, but by using a special technique of mixing two colours of stain, it was possible to
achieve a similar (colour) pattern on wood.
The Magma designs are made from solid oak wood.Soft curves and undulating shapes
characterise the aesthetics of the collection. After the pieces have been dyed, a long process of
multiple castings follows to create a high-gloss epoxy layer of several millimetres thick. This
technique is known as ‘liquid glass’ finishing, which makes it look like the entire object is
enclosed in by a layer of glass. Inspired by the molten rock beneath the earth's crust called
magma, the core of this collection also appears to be in motion due to the lush colour gradients
and only encapsulated by a thin layer.
