Clay Disc
The Clay Discs are a collection of wall objects inspired by the unique patterns found in dried soil.
Cracks in clay soil occur when wet, muddy sediment dries and contracts. As the top layer shrinks while the material underneath remains the same size, tension is created. This results in the
characteristic cracks. As the tension continues to build, the edges begin to curl. The design of the
Clay Disc - S1 is based on this phenomenon.
The shape of the steel is milled from solid panels of oak wood by a CNC machine. The shape is
then 'sculpted' in the oak wood by hand, allowing for certain patterns in the wood grain and knots
to be emphasised or removed, giving each Clay Disc its own identity. The oak panels are dyed or
left natural and then finished with a satin gloss coating. To accentuate the shape of the cracks,
they are inlaid with polished metal such as brass, copper or stainless steel.
